Medieval Festival in Mauterndorf
Every year in July, Mauterndorf hosts a medieval festival all weekend long. In fact, the whole town is wrapped in the aura of the Middle Ages. Numerous different groups perform. At many sites, visitors are treated to shows of combat, juggling, theater and much more. Visit the castle, the knights’ pavilions and many market stands. Here, you will find merchants offering frills and essentials, as you will artisans and spinners. Music and dance are an important part of the event, too, along with medieval performances by children’s groups from Mauterndorf.
Prangstangen in Zederhaus and Muhr
Be sure to attend the unique Prangstangen parades which take place in UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Salzburger Lungau. Every year on 24 June, six- to eight-meters tall wooden poles are carried through Zederhaus, poles that have been decorated with as many as 50,000 individual flowers. In the National Park Village of Muhr, this festival takes place on the Feast of Peter & Paul on 29 June.
In UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Salzburger Lungau, there are actually 10 of these giant figures. One Samson is around 6.5 meters tall and weighs around 85 kilograms. On high church holidays, Samson dances to the music of the Samson Waltz on main squares. The figure is always accompanied by two dwarves, along with the town band and ceremonial militia. Be sure to visit one of the local heritage events taking place during your visit to Mauterndorf!
Mauterndorf Castle is actually located close to Lüftenegger’s Pine Guesthouse. Be sure to pay a visit to this medieval castle and former summer residence of the Salzburg prince-archbishops. You are bound to be fascinated and excited. The main defensive tower is 44 meters high, from where you can enjoy fascinating views across Taurach valley. An audio guide, which also offers a separate version just for children, will add to the intrigue of your personal tour.
Schloss Moosham was the seat of jurisdiction in the area until 1790, also a place infamous for its witch burnings. It has been privately owned since 1886. Schloss Moosham is now a museum that features rare hunting weapons, a collection of carriages, a torture chamber, along with many finds from Roman times. Most of the rooms in the museum are open to visitors.
This highest Alpine airfield in Austria is distinguished by Föhn weather systems and extended periods of excellent thermals, as it is an absolutely unique location. From mid-April until October, glider pilots enjoy our region from a whole new perspective. Gliders can be either pulley-launched or towed by motorized planes.
The gondola also operates on the Grosseck during the summer months, carrying you effortlessly to the top of this exciting mountain. Once there, you can begin easy hiking tours or follow the Natur Pur path all the way to Mauterndorf.
Also operating in summer are the Sonnenbahn from St. Michael up the Speiereck, the triple chairlift from the Katschberg up the Aineck, the 6-passenger Samson lift on the Fanningberg as well as the Grünwaldkopf lift in Obertauern.
A ride on the highest narrow-gauge railway in Austria is extraordinary. Departing from Mauterndorf, this historic steam train runs through Taurachtal to St. Andrä and return. Take a journey back in time!
