Obertauern - Twenger Almsee - Grosses Gurpitschek 2,526 m - Weisspriach
Our favorite hiking tour, just for you!
The early bird catches the worm!
As is typical for hikers, you will get started early in the morning! You will be able to park your car in Obertauern, next to Jugendgästehaus Young Austria. From there, a steadily rising tractor path leads you up to the Riegele Alm in about 1 hour. Be sure to take a break there. And enjoy a great selection of their own homemade products. The cows, horses and goats are certain to give you a friendly welcome to the hut.
Afterwards, the hiking path takes you higher into the mountains for around another hour. Suddenly you won’t believe your eyes, as you see before you the Twenger Almsee. This tarn is as pretty as a picture, and you should definitely let yourself spend some time here. Relax next to the tarn, dangle your feet in the water. Now the path leads you up to an alpine gap, from where, if you wish, you can hike another 1.5 hours to the summit of the Grosses Gurpitscheck. But only tackle this last stage if you are very surefooted. If you prefer not to climb to the top, take the path leading down to Weisspriach.
Before you lie the Upper and Lower Schönalmsee as well as the Wirpitschsee. Here, too, you can enjoy the water and tranquility! The Tonimörtlhütte, not far from the Wirpitschsee, treats hikers to the finest Kaiserschmarrn, farmhouse doughnuts and more! The Longa (the river flowing through Weisspriach) is one of Austria’s most beautiful natural treasures. Emerald-green, the Longa flows silently and sedately by. Before heading home, two more huts – the Granglerhütte and Ulnhütte – also await you!
In Weisspriach, you can ride the valley bus or take a taxi back home, or simply use the car you parked here the day before. This is a day that will stay with you forever!
