Hiking in the Lungau Region

Only where you have been on foot, have you truly been at all!

When we say “Healing Power of the Alps”, this is what we mean: more than 60 alpine tarns, 45 mountain huts, easy family hikes and challenging summit ascents at up to 3,000 meters above sea level.

You have chosen UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Salzburger Lungau as your holiday destination. You will marvel at, experience and grasp just how pristine this region truly is. You will experience how free and contended you feel outdoors in nature. You will be astonished at how little you need in order to find happiness. You will grasp how clear and beautiful nature can be. Simply by hiking.

We will take you by the hand.

Hiking for all abilities: Discover the many hiking possibilities together with our hiking guide Herby and owner Günter. Whether you select an easy hike, with virtually no climb worthy of note, leading to a mountain hut, or perhaps choose a waterfall at the valley head as your ultimate destination. Whether you hike with your whole family along a theme path, or prefer to conquer the highest mountain in Lungau, the Grosser Hafner. That’s entirely up to you.  In each and every case, you will marvel at, experience and grasp just how pristine this region truly is. You will experience how free and contended you feel outdoors in nature. You will be astonished at how little you need in order to find happiness!

Our beautiful home region, the Lungau, will captivate you. Places of immense natural power will ease those thoughts that might be weighing you down, rare moorlands will reveal to you a never-before-seen paradise of animals and plants. The 140 km-long St. Leonhard’s Pilgrimage Way from Salzburg to Tamsweg also runs through our region. So, isn’t it time for you, too, to hit the trail? The simple life amid nature is clear, free – and just waiting for you.

Now is the perfect time to book your pine room with organic breakfast along with Lüftenegger’s famous hospitality!

Our favorite hike, just for you!

Obertauern - Twenger Almsee - Grosses Gurpitschek 2,526 m - Weisspriach

Our favorite hiking tour, just for you!

The early bird catches the worm!

Obertauern - Twenger Almsee

As is typical for hikers, you will get started early in the morning! You will be able to park your car in Obertauern, next to Jugendgästehaus Young Austria. From there, a steadily rising tractor path leads you up to the Riegele Alm in about 1 hour. Be sure to take a break there. And enjoy a great selection of their own homemade products. The cows, horses and goats are certain to give you a friendly welcome to the hut.

Afterwards, the hiking path takes you higher into the mountains for around another hour. Suddenly you won’t believe your eyes, as you see before you the Twenger Almsee. This tarn is as pretty as a picture, and you should definitely let yourself spend some time here. Relax next to the tarn, dangle your feet in the water. Now the path leads you up to an alpine gap, from where, if you wish, you can hike another 1.5 hours to the summit of the Grosses Gurpitscheck. But only tackle this last stage if you are very surefooted. If you prefer not to climb to the top, take the path leading down to Weisspriach.

Before you lie the Upper and Lower Schönalmsee as well as the Wirpitschsee. Here, too, you can enjoy the water and tranquility! The Tonimörtlhütte, not far from the Wirpitschsee, treats hikers to the finest Kaiserschmarrn, farmhouse doughnuts and more! The Longa (the river flowing through Weisspriach) is one of Austria’s most beautiful natural treasures. Emerald-green, the Longa flows silently and sedately by. Before heading home, two more huts – the Granglerhütte and Ulnhütte – also await you!

In Weisspriach, you can ride the valley bus or take a taxi back home, or simply use the car you parked here the day before. This is a day that will stay with you forever!
